How can we help?

Short answers to the common questions. If yours is not here, contact us.

Getting started

Install the plugin

The plugin is not published yet. Once it is, open the plugins menu in a Figma design file, search for Docs to Design and run it, or start from its page in the Figma Community.

It runs in the Figma desktop app and in Figma's supported browsers. There is nothing else to install.

Connect your account

You can try the plugin without an account: it imports the first 3 pages of any PDF. Connect a free account to pick up to 20 pages of a PDF, 5 documents a month.

  1. Open the plugin and choose Sign in. The plugin shows a code and your browser opens this site.
  2. Sign in with Google.
  3. Type the code the plugin shows, then choose Connect plugin.
  4. Go back to Figma. The plugin connects by itself within a few seconds.

Keep the plugin open while you sign in. Only type a code your own plugin is showing: never one that someone sent you.

Make your first import

  1. Choose a PDF in the plugin. If it has a password, type it in the plugin.
  2. Pick the pages you want, one by one or as a range: up to 20 with an account, or the first 3 without one. Keep the mode on Editable.
  3. Check the fonts on the review screen, then import.
  4. The pages come in as frames, one per page, in a section on your canvas.

Importing PDFs

Choosing pages

The page picker shows the PDF's pages. Select them one by one, or type a range such as 1-5, 9. With an account, one import holds up to 20 pages; without one, the plugin imports the first 3. Each page you choose becomes a frame, and the frames go in one section.

Modes

  • Editable, the default: text comes in as Figma text layers you can retype.
  • Vector outlines: text comes in as shapes. It looks identical to the PDF in any font, but it cannot be edited as text.
  • Image: each page comes in as one image, for reference or tracing.

Options

  • Text as lines: lines are joined into paragraphs by default, so text reflows when you edit it. This option keeps each line on its own.
  • Rebuild auto layout turns stacks and columns into auto layout frames, with their spacing.
  • Make components turns exact repeats into a component and its instances. It is off by default, and needs auto layout.
  • Import invisible text brings in the hidden text that OCR software adds to scanned PDFs.

The plugin has a few more options, for page layout, size and image quality; their details here are to verify.

Fonts

Figma can only use fonts it has. Each font in the PDF is matched to a font Figma can use, Google Fonts included. Where the exact font is not available, a metric-compatible substitute keeps lines the same length. For example, where the originals aren't available, Helvetica and Arial can become Arimo, Times becomes Tinos, Courier becomes Cousine, Calibri becomes Carlito, Cambria becomes Caladea and Georgia becomes Gelasio.

Before you import, a review screen lists each PDF font and its match, with a picker to choose another. Your choices are remembered for next time.

The import report

After each import, the report lists the pages: the characters found and how many became text, the fonts, and the paths, images and effects. Copy diagnostics copies it in one click, to send us when you need help.

Password-protected PDFs

The plugin asks for the password. It is used only to open the file on your computer, and is never stored or sent anywhere.

Effects and images

Vectors come in as vectors and images as images. Drop shadows, masks and gradients become Figma's own where they match exactly. An effect Figma cannot draw exactly is rendered as an image in its place, so the page still looks right; that part is not editable.

Images and scans inside a PDF

Black-and-white scans (JBIG2 and CCITT), JPEG 2000 images and CMYK or ICC colour are decoded inside the plugin, with no network needed. The one exception: in Safari, JPEG 2000 images need an internet connection.

Scanned PDFs

A page that is only an image comes in as an image. Turning it into editable text (OCR) is not available yet; it is planned. If the scan already has hidden text from OCR software, turn on Import invisible text to bring it in.

Text drawn as outlines

Many design tools, Figma and Canva among them, export lettering as outlines with an invisible text copy on top. The plugin turns that copy into editable text in the right place. Text that was fully outlined, with no copy, stays as vector shapes until text recognition (OCR) is available.

Exporting to PDF

Export frames as one PDF

  1. Open the plugin's Export PDF tab.
  2. Choose frames, or a section. They are exported in reading order.
  3. Keep each page the size you designed it, or fit it to A4 or Letter.
  4. Choose Download.

Each frame is exported by Figma itself, and the pages are merged into one PDF. Links between frames become page jumps, and each frame gets a bookmark.

Exporting to PDF is free and unlimited: it needs no account and doesn't use imports.

Imports and early access

What counts as an import

One import is one document: up to 20 pages of one PDF, any pages you pick. Choose them one by one or as a range. A longer PDF can be imported in parts, each part an import, and your dashboard shows the parts of one PDF as one line.

An import counts once at least one of its pages is on your canvas, and is given back if none were placed. If you stop part-way, the pages already placed stay.

Without an account, or once your imports for the month are used, the plugin imports the first 3 pages of a PDF. Those imports are not counted.

How many imports you get

  • Without an account: the first 3 pages of any PDF, as often as you like.
  • With a free account: 5 documents a month, up to 20 pages each, any pages you pick, with every feature, while Docs to Design is in early access.
  • Need more? Ask from your dashboard.
  • Exporting to PDF is free and unlimited: it needs no account and doesn't use imports.

When your imports renew

Every month, on the 1st at midnight Indian time. Your dashboard shows how many are left and the date they renew. Imports you did not use do not carry over.

When you run out

Until your imports renew, the plugin imports the first 3 pages of a PDF, as it does without an account. Everything you already imported stays in your Figma files. If you need more, choose Request more imports on your dashboard, or tell us what you are working on.

Troubleshooting

The plugin does not connect

  • Keep the plugin open while you sign in on the website. Closing it stops the connection.
  • The code on the website must match the code in the plugin. If it does not, start again from the plugin.
  • A connection code works once and for 10 minutes. If you waited too long, start again.
  • Check that Figma can reach the internet. The plugin needs it to check your account.

The PDF will not open

If a PDF is damaged, the plugin says so in plain words. Open it in a PDF viewer and save or print it to a new PDF, then import that. Word and PowerPoint files need to be saved as PDF first.

The layers look different from the PDF

  • Different fonts: the exact font is not available in Figma. See Fonts.
  • Text came in as shapes: the import used Vector outlines, or the text was fully outlined in the PDF. See Modes and Text drawn as outlines.
  • Text came in as an image: the page is a scan, or the import used Image. See Scanned PDFs.
  • An effect is not editable: Figma has no exact equivalent, so it was rendered as an image in place. See Effects and images.
  • JPEG 2000 images missing in Safari: Safari needs an internet connection to show them. See Images and scans.

My import count looks wrong

Imports are counted only when pages reach your canvas. An import that never finishes, for example because Figma was closed, is given back after 15 minutes. Your dashboard lists recent imports with their pages. If something was counted that should not have been, tell us and we will correct it.

Privacy and your files

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. PDF processing happens on your computer, in the plugin, so your documents are not uploaded. When you are signed in, the server receives your account and, for each import, counts: pages, layers and frames, time taken, status. Never the file, its name, its metadata, its text or its images.

The plugin also downloads data files for pdf.js, such as standard fonts and character maps for Chinese, Japanese and Korean text: from a public CDN today, from our own site later. Those requests name the data file, not your document. The full details are in the privacy policy.
